Hi Everyone,
I just did a guest post over at the Curvy Coach - she is switching up her site to offer more fashion advice so click over there to check it out.
Professional Wear for the Plus Size Woman
You have heard the cliché “dress for success” over and over. Guess what? It is a cliché for a reason. Numerous studies have shown that hiring managers are more likely to hire someone who is dressed neatly and professionally over an equally (or more) qualified candidate who lacks professional polish.
Customers often tell me “it is so hard to find professional clothing for plus sized women” or “suits don’t fit my body properly”.
I hear you, dressing your curves to look “professional” isn’t always the easiest task but it can be done with style using a few tips.
1) Invest in a good quality, well made black suit. A black suit never goes out of style and can be dressed up or down for years to come. Suit skirts or pants can be worn separate from the jacket with a sweater or blouse for a slightly more casual, but still professional look. The blazer can be worn with a more casual pair of pants to pull together an elegant, but still casual look. Heck, I often wear my blazers with a sweater, jeans and heels to go out on the town. I love this black suit my Marina Rinaldi. It screams professional polish and has pieces that can be worn a number of different ways.
2) Tailor, Tailor, Tailor! Men always tailor their suits to get a crisp, professional look. You should too. Be sure to buy a suit big enough to fit the largest part of your body. I have an ample behind so I buy pants big enough to fit my rear, and then have the waist taken in to ensure a gap free, custom looking fit. If you have a large bust, purchase your jacket large enough to fit your bust. You can always have it taken in through the waist or shoulders. Tailoring can make any suit look custom made just for you and will ensure a professional, put together look.
3) Don’t overdo it. Period. Job interviews and big meetings are not the time to showcase your love for tight shirts, big bold prints or big gold jewelry. Taking a slightly more conservative route is the safest bet during these situations (although, just about any other time I say go big). A bright shirt, bright pair of shoes or necklace will make you stand out. All three together will make you stand out for the wrong reason.
As a plus size woman in the workplace, it is easy to assume that you will be judged and just not try. Do not fall into that trap! Spend a little bit of time planning and tailoring your professional wardrobe. Your career with thank you.
