There have been mixed reviews on Hillary’s rehearsal dinner dress (who designed it btw?? anyone know?) I think it is kinda cute. Nice and flowy and relaxed. It allowed her joy to show through in a stylish, yet somewhat casual way. That said, on a woman of a certain age, that much volume is a little much! I would have liked it without the sleeve or in a more subtle print.
What do you think? Do you think that style could translate into plus size or would it just look like a muumuu?

While a slowing global economy pushes entrepreneurial hopefuls to alternate career paths, one former Forbes magazine columnist intends to counter the trend by improving prospects for 1 million startups around the world, including one company in Los Altos Hills.
Introduced in January, Sramana Mitra’s “One Million by One Million” initiative hinges on the belief that the success of even the smallest entrepreneurs can contribute to alleviating America’s economic woes through job creation. 1M/1M, which already has reached 4,000 companies, aims to resolve the country’s money problems by helping 1 million entrepreneurs reach $1 million in revenue – the most precarious step – by 2020.
“ I don’t believe in large masses of government jobs, because our government is neck-deep in debt,” said Mitra, a strategy consultant in Silicon Valley since 1994. “The only kind of job creation that can be relied on is through entrepreneurship – people taking destiny in their own hands.”
But Mitra, former CEO of three companies and strategy consultant for 80-plus others, said novice businesses often fold because they fail to do enough market research in their eagerness to profit immediately. 1M/1M provides companies with tips on “crafting” companies – establishing and connecting with strong consumer bases – and a chance to meet with a handful of angel investors, who can offer the initial capital startups need.
Although any company – even beyond the $1 million mark – can access the methodology and resources online (www.sramanamitra.com), only those with “validated customer feedback, business models and pricing models” qualify for investor introductions.
Mitra selected local plus-size, designer e-boutique La Grande Dame and introduced mother-daughter owners Michelle Wood and Catherine Wood Hill, Los Altos Hills residents, to investors last April. The startup already has offers from at least five investors.
“We believe that they’re going after a business opportunity that is real,” Mitra said.
Opened April 2009, La Grande Dame offers styles with a professional bent for size-14-plus women between 30 and 55 – a rare find in the fashion industry, where plus sizes range from six to eight, and larger designs are frequently much less flattering.
Hill, a former public relations agent, came to Mitra with a clientele of several thousand and the goal to expand. Mitra helped the company narrow marketing strategies to pockets with the highest demand for their services, largely decreasing marketing costs.
But Hill said their expansion plans do not include a brick-and-mortar location, at least not for a while. The pair want to maintain full control over their company, which discourages them from accepting investor funding. Income, however, is not a problem. In fact, both the mother-daughter duo and Mitra expect La Grande Dame to earn $1 million well before 2020.
La Grande Dame’s immediate plans focus on adding to its customer list, especially in the Bay Area, where, Hill said, “there’s a big stigma about plus sizes.” The founders started reversing such notions by hosting get-togethers for potential consumers in Los Altos, events they hope to continue.
“These women need to know that they deserve to be beautiful,” Wood said.
Featured La Grande Dame designers include Anna Scholz, Marina Rinaldi and Tadashi, and prices range from $30 to more than $200 for the most luxurious items of clothing. |

I was thinking about how to keep cool and chic in this lovely heat wave that has visited NYC again this weekend. I have a big puff of hair and I like to not always wear it in a ponytail.
Normally, I will take a scarf out of my collection (I’ve been collecting for years) and tie it around my hair; this is my offering for today… A beautiful silk scarf tied bandana style to keep your hair off your face but still keep you looking beautiful! I have a collection that starts at the dollar store and goes all the way to Hermes. My favorite, however are from Coach. I also will search out discount stores and look for vintage designer finds.
Bluefly has some beautiful Pucci and I am eyeing one for my visit to the hospital to make me look a bit more presentable!

With all of the recent media attention around plus size models, plus size clothing and full figured women it is easy to be confused. What size is “plus size”? What size are plus size models? Where can I buy plus size clothing? How do I flatter my body?
So, technically “plus size” starts at a Women’s size 14 – the equivalent of a “Missy”, “Straight” or sometimes misnamed “Normal” size 16. Just FYI – a size 14 is the AVERAGE size of a woman in the US so don’t let anyone make you feel abnormal for being in the plus size range. Most women are!! Typically, plus size stores carry sizes W14-24. There are stores that cater to women size 14+ or size 24+. These stores often call them selves “super plus size” (horrible name!! It sounds like a tampon.)
Ok, you are probably wondering, “if most of the women in the US are plus size, why is it so hard to find something cute that fits me?? Or, why don’t the big designers carry make clothes for me? Don’t they want my money?”
The answer is complicated and rife with prejudice. Most designers don’t want to design for plus size women because they are sizist. They would rather alienate a huge portion of the population rather than design clothes for our curves. It’s the sad truth.
The second, more complicated answer is that the few designers who have ventured into plus sizes have lost money, leaving plus size consumers with a reputation for being “cheap”. At La Grande Dame, we don’t belive that plus size women are cheap, but rather, you have not been provided with great, high quality designer clothes that actually flatter your bodies. Our store is living, breathing, selling proof that if designers and stores provide excellent selection and personal customer service, plus size women are willing to spend just as much as their straight size sisters on designer clothing.
 Size 14 Plus Size Model
Ohhhh, and don’t get me started on the plus size model issue, that is a whole ‘nother post but, any model over a size 6 is considered “plus size” – just cuz the industry is messed up. The model above is a size 14. Tell me she does not look HOT in a 1X Melissa Masse Dress?? No photo shopping or pinning on this picture Why is she considered the absolute largest on the plus model scale????
What do you think? Comments on plus size definitions? Questions? Want to tell me off? Please comment below
I will touch on the “Where” in part 2 tomorrow

Can you believe fall styles will be arriving in July??? One of our favorite plus size designers, Marina Rinaldi, has a stunning fall collection and we are getting extremely excited to preview it. For those of you who are not familiar with Marina Rinaldi, here is a little bit of information about them and a few iconic images from past collections.
The Marina Rinaldi line was launched in 1980 (ancient by plus size standards!!) by the Max Mara Fashion Group. At the time it was a revolution in the history of clothing: up until that time there were no companies making clothes for “real” women, women sized 14 and larger. Marina Rinaldi still designs a full collection of clothing and accessories for curvy women. They even design plus size boots and belts!! (don’t worry, the belts will be here soon )
La Grande Dame is proud to offer the most complete selection of Marina Rinaldion the web.

I hear there was a fabulous question on Facebook about flower accessories! I am mildly obsessed with all things flowery. One place I love to wear flower is on my shoes! In the summer, you will always find me with a flowery sandal and a sundress. What super sassy female wouldn’t want to put some embellishment on her toes? I found a great sunny yellow pair of Pierre Dumas sandals on Piperlime. I also found a great pair of hot pink Stuart Weitzman’s on Zappos. My heart may have skipped a beat when I saw these. If you want to take it over the top for a summer wedding or any kind of summer party, check out these Giuseppe Zanotti darlings!

I hate to admit that I covet things. You aren’t supposed to. I do. That’s that. I *covet* Anna Scholz dresses. It’s as simple as that. Two of my favorites for this summer are the Silk Habotai Handkerchief Dress.
Anna Scholz Silk Plus Size Dress
I just want this dress for any and all occasions. I really want it for my baby shower, but I don’t know if it will cover my bump by then! It makes me swoon. This dress is full of color, grace and just sheer beauty! I cannot even look at this dress without shivers. The other dress that I covet because I want to be a 6 foot tall Amazonian Princess is the Double Silk Border Maxi Dress.
Anna Scholz Black and White Maxi
Black and White graphic prints are all the rage now and they are beautifully draped over your body in this dress. I really feel like a princess when I wear Anna because her designs are so regal. The beauty and the simplicity of this dress just stand on its own. I would love to throw on some vintage lucite bangles with it and go!
What do you think? What’s your favorite Anna Scholz dress?

Thankfully the genetics that got together when my parents did gave me hazel eyes. They will change color from green to brown, from yellow to red. I cannot make this up, they do, just take my word on it. So, getting eyeshadow is always so much fun because I can pick almost any shade and rock it! *Thanks mom and dad.* Of course though, I would have a favorite which is Smashbox Eyelights Palette in Flash. It features three colors and one of them is the most beautiful green that I put on almost every day. It is smokey and shimmery.. two of my most favorite things. After I layer the green on, I slather my lashes Tammy Faye Baker style! Just kidding, but I am known to never leave the house without mascara!
